The Two Speaking Tasks

Both tasks are short, and both are recorded. What they test is different.

Task 1

Listen and Repeat

Hear one sentenceSay it back, word for word

You hear one sentence and repeat it exactly. The sentences start short and get longer, and each one comes inside a brief campus situation.

It is not only a pronunciation check: a long sentence is hard to repeat word for word unless you follow its grammar and meaning. Do not add your own words. Say exactly what you heard.

Task 2

Take an Interview

Hear a questionAnswer right away, in your own words

An interviewer asks about an academic or campus topic and you answer out loud, moving from your own experience toward opinions and explanations.

There is no preparation time. You start speaking the moment each question ends.

Unfamiliar at First

Listen and Repeat did not exist on the old TOEFL, and answering with no planning time takes practice. Both skills get better with regular practice, so a new task type is nothing to worry about.

Show the question

Good points. Lastly, do you think basic cooking should be taught in school, or is it better learned at home through family and personal experience? Why?

StudyGround tip: answer the question in your first sentence, then add a reason or an example in one or two more. Forty-five seconds goes fast. Play your recording back and check that your answer comes first.

What scores well

What Makes a Spoken Response Effective?

In Listen and Repeat, accuracy comes first. Every word counts, and the listener should understand you without effort. Natural rhythm and word stress (saying important words more strongly) help your meaning come through.

In the interview, answer the question directly and then develop it with a reason or a short example. ETS says a strong response is clear and well organized. It is spoken at a natural speed, with correct grammar and the right words for the topic.

Myths

Two Common Misconceptions

"I need a native-speaker accent." You don't. ETS checks whether your speech is easy to understand for a listener who speaks English well. An accent is fine as long as your words come through clearly.

"I should memorize answers before the test." Knowing how to organize an answer helps, but memorized responses rarely fit the exact question you are asked. The interview rewards answering the actual question in a natural way.
