TOEFL Reading

1. Complete the Words (빈칸 단어 완성)

Complete the Words

Fill in the missing letters in the paragraph.

Archaeologists often study the distribution of ancient pottery to map forgotten trade routes. By examining the broken , experts trace where domestic . When matching artifacts appear in geographic regions, historians understand that complex linked those populations. Such widespread exchanges suggest that early societies were highly interdependent rather than entirely isolated. Consequently, a simple clay jar provides crucial evidence about historical economic relationships and cultural interactions.

2. Read in Daily Life (일상 글 읽기)

Update regarding your washing machine repair

Dear Mr. Henderson, our technician completed the initial inspection of your washing machine this morning. While the motor is now functioning properly, a leak was discovered in the drainage hose during the final testing phase. We must order a specific replacement seal before we can successfully finalize the repair. Please contact our office to schedule a brief follow-up visit once the part arrives this Wednesday.

Q1What is the main purpose of the email?

정답은 (B)입니다.

이메일은 마지막 점검에서 배수 호스 누수가 발견되어 아직 수리를 끝내지 못했다고 알리고, 부품이 도착하면 짧은 후속 방문 일정을 잡아 달라고 요청합니다("Please contact our office to schedule a brief follow-up visit").

Q2According to the email, why is the company unable to finish the repair immediately?

정답은 (C)입니다.

"We must order a specific replacement seal before we can successfully finalize the repair"라는 문장에서, 필요한 부품을 먼저 주문해야 해서 지금은 수리를 끝낼 수 없다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

3. Read an Academic Passage (학술 지문 읽기)

Vibrational Signaling in Treehoppers

Many small insects communicate not by sound carried through the air but by vibrations sent through the surfaces they stand on. Treehoppers, a group of plant-feeding insects related to cicadas, rely almost entirely on this kind of substrate-borne signaling. Each species produces a distinctive pattern of pulses by rocking its abdomen, and these vibrations travel along stems and leaves to nearby companions.

The mechanism depends on the host plant rather than on the insect alone. When a male treehopper rocks its body, the muscle contractions push tiny pulses into the stem, which then conducts the signal much like a tuning fork transferring sound through wood. Females walking on the same shrub feel these arriving waves through specialized leg sensors and can identify a suitable mate without ever seeing him. In one well-studied species, Umbonia crassicornis, the male's call elicits a precisely timed female response that allows the pair to locate each other on a dense bush within seconds.

Yet this private channel comes with constraints. Vibrations weaken sharply across thicker stems and barely cross from one plant to the next, which sets a hard ceiling on signaling range. Some predatory insects, including assassin bugs, have evolved sensitivity to the same frequencies and use overheard treehopper calls to find their prey. Stiff or wilted host plants distort the original pulse pattern, garbling the message and sometimes leading females to ignore otherwise compatible males.

1 / 5

Q1How do treehoppers transmit their communication signals to nearby companions?

Q2The word "elicits" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to

정답은 (A)입니다.

Q3How does a female treehopper identify a suitable mate on the same plant?

Q4What can be inferred about treehoppers attempting to communicate on a wilted host plant?

정답은 (A)입니다.

Q5Look at the four letters (A, B, C, and D) in the passage that indicate where the following sentence could be added. Where would the sentence best fit?

Each pattern travels with little distortion along a fresh, rigid stem.
